PUB!

Back when we relaunched we said we'd have social meetings too... much in
the same style that StaffsLUG used to have before the relaunch.
Due to a recurring (every November) diary conflict for using the WRS
(the room we use for workshops)... now is a perfect time for a purely
social meeting!
So if you fancy a pint... then I'm suggesting we meet at the KPA
Clubhouse <https://www.kpa.org.uk/the-clubhouse> (some of you went there
after the first workshop meeting in September with Richard)... from 6pm
onwards on Tuesday 19th November 2019.
Basically the KPA Clubhouse <https://www.kpa.org.uk/the-clubhouse> is a
pub ran by a post-graduate union (the KPA <https://www.kpa.org.uk/>),
but it's open to the public. In short you're unlikely to find any crazy
drunken university students here, it's more likely people that work on
the campus and senior academic types.
They've also got an upstairs function room, so if there are enough
people we can always move things up there too.
I've actually ran the odd social at this venue in the past and it's a
great place... so much that I've managed to find an old leaflet (that I
made for another group) and I've butchered it into being a LUG leaflet,
see below! :P
It's got the directions on it at least!
If you're got other dates/place in mind - now is the time to say... but
assuming there isn't a general consensus for something else... this'll
be it.

Blog post on OggCamp 2019

OggCamp 2019

Re: Commemorate 20 years of StaffsLUG

New logo looks fine to me.
20 years ago I and (mainly) another member designed a logo for Stafford
Bridge Club incorporating the 4 card suits with the 'Stafford' knot.
I was told very seriously by a member with legal experience that we
should get permission from Lord Stafford to use the knot as it was the
property of ' the family'. We did nothing & I think its still in use
with no complaints.
At the absolute worst you could be asked to 'desist' and then change it.
I was always of the opinion that 'It's better to ask forgiveness than
permission'.

Hmm impersonators?

Just wanted to drop a message to say someone's registered staffslug.org
(rather than .org.uk) back in July.
I wouldn't have noticed, except I was sending a message to the mailing
list earlier and put .org. instead of .org.uk by accident - instead of
our mail server refusing to send the message... instead it bounced.
So yeah, don't know who it is - I do have a guess though... but in any
case letting you know in case any dodgy stuff turns up there - it's not us!

Looking back at last week

So it's been decided to make a little blog post every time there has
been a workshop meeting (sometimes it may be made before hand - if
there's a lot of useful information to digest before attending).
The point is that it shouldn't be a laborious task in articulating every
detail of what occurred...
But rather much like a quick diary entry... to recap/remind those who
came, about what occurred and attach any slides, files, images, etc...
that were used in any presentations.
First one has been published.. and on this one occasion (to celebrate
the relaunch) there is also a lovely photo of some of the people who
attended who didn't mind being in a group photo :)

about past preparation work the LUG has undergone in the last few

Commemorate 20 years of StaffsLUG

So for the past few weeks I've been chatting with Dave Roberts who
started the LUG back in 1999. One idea he had was to commemorate the
last 20 years, possibly with some sort of logo made by a graphic designer
in the LUG (if we have any)... in particular an idea for our Tux/Knot logo
atop a pair of Roman numeral X's.
I did briefly mentioned this idea at the last meeting, but no idea if
anyone heard me (as it was towards the end as we were taking pictures).
So I've had a quick go at making something in any case... the PNG should
open fine in anything but the SVG isn't quite websafe yet - so if you want
to open that, use Inkscape which is what it was created in.
Feedback would be great, or even alternatives?
Will give it about a week and then use whatever we've got on the
right-hand side panel of the website... not much of 2019 left now anyway
to celebrate 20 years!
