Asus eee PC Wanted/For Sale

Hi all,
I'm looking to either borrow an eee pc or an inexpensive Linux laptop with
good audio this weekend at Keele. Basically I need the laptop for one event
and if anyone can help me out.
The other option is that I buy an eee pc 701 and then be looking to sell it
on next week at a lower cost, so please get into touch if you're interested.

Jobs in local area

Hi, I'm going to be finishing school soon, I was wondering if there
are any full time jobs available over the summer.
I can use Linux and Windows, I understand most working network
systems, and I can also run little jobs. I don't have a driving
liscense though
I will send my CV to anyone who has any jobs, they dont have to be
associated with computers, I would just be interested in working in an
environment involving this sort of thing.
This would be through the months June - September.

Congratulations to Phil Oakley on a well run open-source presentation.
Seemed to be plenty of interest from the public, especially when the
word "free" came up !
It was mostly 'buntu on show but Jason and I were there to represent PCLinuxOS.
Dave was there too ! ( during a break from painting his house )

Oh, I've well and truly buggered my Xubuntu box. One BIOS upgrade and
it's all in Chinese and it doesn't recognise disks bigger than 20gb
:-( First BIOS upgrade that's ever gone wrong for me.
However, as always, I have a get out clause for this one. No I didn't
copy the original BIOS - this would normally be time to say ooer
missus. I do have an identical board so I'll copy the BIOS from that,
boot from that chip, whip it out once booted and replace with the
original now borked BIOS chip and reflash that. It 'should' work...

Trentham Gardens Infopoint 18 May

Hi
As mentioned on the infopoint list I have organised to have a table at
Trentham Gardens this Sunday (18th) to promote free software/Linux as per
the infopoint project site http://infopointproject.org. Happy for anybody to
help in anyway if they would like.
I plan to take a couple of laptops and distribute some cd's say
gnewsense/ubuntu for free or very little to cover costs. I do not have much
in the way of flyers or info sheets so any help would be appreciated.
I am not currently an active member of any LUG but can give out information
if anybody would like to give me any. I am not a Linux expert but happily
use it at home and am prepared to give up a bit of my time to promote the
use of it. It will be interesting to see how it is received.
Any help , thoughts or comments greatly appreciated.

Julian and Aidan seek volunteers for action this Saturday before the
Crewe & Nantwich by-election to hand out non-party election leaflets,
and to promote the election webpage quiz. The purposes are:
(a) to attempt to raise awareness of the issues we care about that are
not featuring as any part of the campaign.
(b) to develop the science of connecting electoral politics to campaign
web-pages.
If you are a member of No2ID, or any campaign that is effected by the
decisions made in Parliament whom you seek to influence through the MP's
constituents, you need to be involved with this project. During the
election campaign, the political parties produce dreadful propaganda
with terrible webpages, and get away with it. We need to learn from
their techniques, and establish what actions make a difference. We will
produce different leaflets, some in colour, and distribute them to
different parts of the city. Perhaps you could make a contribution to
it. Anyone who joins us on the day will get access to the full log-files
and comments generated by the web-page.
This will be a learning experience, so that come the general election we
might actually be good.

The Public Whip
While activists are descending from all corners of the country to Crewe
& Nantwich to help with their partys' by-election campaigns, volunteers
from the Public Whip
today launched an online questionnaire to help people make up their
minds about who to vote for. The webpage:

compares people's opinions to the way each party has voted in Parliament
on a selection of important issues that have been in the news in the
last five years. It uses the web-site www.theyworkforyou.com as a source
of data.
As Julian Todd of Public Whip explained "An election is the one time
people have a direct say in what the politicians do. Unfortunately, with
slick sound-bites and colourful leaflets focussing on one or two key
points, it's easy to forget the bigger issues that will be decided by
the MP who eventually wins the seat."
Aidan McGuire said "The national issues which our Mp's have control over
are not being discussed with the candidates during this campaign. People
are easily distracted by smaller matters like car parking charges, when
what is actually decided by those who are elected include compulsory ID
Cards, nuclear power plants, freedom of information laws, and the
strategic supply of fuel and electricity."
"We want people to remember the bigger issues and ask hard questions of
the candidates about how they would vote after they are elected. People
have become used to not being told what the policies are and not
insisting on their right to know."
Here in Crewe & Nantwich, the Labour candidate, Tamsin Dunwoody, is
running on her mother's name. Gwyneth Dunwoody was a popular MP partly
because she had a mind of her own and did not vote the government line
on every issue. How many people have looked up which were the issues she
rebelled on, and has anyone asked Tamsin whether she would take the same
position on those issues?
Julian said: "We want people to start using the internet more
effectively to understand what their MPs are doing and to keep a close
watch. Who knows, they might start doing more of what people want them
to do, rather than their own thing all the time. That's our idea of what
democracy would look like.
"That's why we've brought the Public Whip website to the voters of this
city. It's our tiny contribution to democracy. We hope to inspire other
people with our example so they bring their own democracy projects to
places where it matters, like this by-election and other elections in
the future, to help voters make an informed choice. Democracy is too
important to be left to the political parties alone.
About the Public Whip
Public Whip is a website that scans Hansard, the official Parliamentary
record, for all the votes by Mps and sorts them into a database for
further analysis. It was originally written by Francis Irving and
Julian Todd in 2003. All the software is free and open source and is
completely self-funded and maintained by volunteer work.

Primes With Complex Factors

When Gauss discovered Complex Numbers he found he could use them to factorise
Primes. For instance 2 can be factorised as (1+i)*(1-i). Only half the Primes
can be factorised like this, but there are Hypercomplex Numbers, like
Quaternions, which can be used to carry the process further.
Recently this topic seems to have attracted further research, and it seems to
me this could be connected with Cryptography and its use of enormous Primes.
Apparently the People's Republic of China are getting expert at cracking
apparently uncrackable ciphers. Does anybody know more about this?

ACPI question :-)

I've got Xubuntu running on an oldish PC. I have to say I am really
enjoying the experience. However, I have a question for the team...
As the PC is booting I get a message flag up about the BIOS being past
the cut date for 2000 (what cutoff?) and I 'apparently' need to do
ACPI=force. Ok, I can do that...but where? Is this in a GRUB file
somewhere? Is it likely to be just hashed out or will I need to type
it in? If the latter is there a specific line that it needs to be
entered on for it to take effect?
